The floating islands of the Uros are located in the Bay of Puno, in the Titicaca National Reserve.
- The Uros live on floating islands – a way of life they adopted a long time ago.
- The islands were built from the totora aquatic plant which also serves as food, medicine and raw material for handicrafts.
- Historians don’t know exactly where the Uros came from and when they settled on Lake Titicaca.
- Nowadays they still live from hunting, fishing, agriculture and countertrade which has always existed in this part of the world.
We invite you to experience this unique way of life through our travel programs.
While continuing our voyage you can enjoy the beautiful landscapes surrounding the lake.
Visit of the island of Amantaní (with overnight stay)
After our magnificent boat trip we land on the island where we are welcomed by our guest families.
- The island of Amantaní is located in the larger part of the lake, outside the Bay of Puno. The island is high-lying, has a good climate and you can enjoy the most amazing sunsets of Lake Titicaca from here.
- Here we find two ritual temples located on more than 4000 meters belonging to the early Inca culture.
- At the beginning of each year rituals are carried out in which most of the locals participate.
- Most inhabitants live from, agriculture, cattle-breeding, textile crafts and fishing.
- The islanders live a very simple life.
Day 2
Visit of the island of Taquile and return trip to Puno
After a delicious and typical breakfast with the family we continue our trip to the island of Taquile.
- Taquile is an island located in the larger part of the lake, outside the bay and about 1 hour from Amantaní as well as 36 km from Puno.
- The island has a population of about 2000 inhabitants who work in the farming, cattle-breeding and textile crafts sector.
- The islanders are dressed in a very traditional way and are known as the best weavers of the region.
- The Taquile textile crafts were even classed as world culture heritage by the UNESCO.
- The island includes wonderful landscapes, like the giant blue lake, the terrace-fields used for growing crops, and its magnificent vegetation throughout the year.
In order to enjoy these beautiful landscapes we start our visit with a hike up to the village square. There we can admire different textile craft products in the community business run by several families.
